Marvash present new EP ‘Az Zagros Ta Zuiderzee’
On November 21st, 2024, Iranian/Dutch music group Marvash release their sophomore EP ‘Az Zagros Ta Zuiderzee’ on all major digital music platforms.
Set up as a mini-suite, ‘Az Zagros Ta Zuiderzee’ is in fact one continuous 12-minute track, divided in six separate chapters. It tells the tale of a journey from the highest mountains of Iran to the deep ancient seas of The Netherlands. A metaphor for the contrasts between Persian music & culture and its Dutch counterparts. However, Marvash embraces these opposites and finds new ways to blend such different principles & backgrounds. ‘Az Zagros Ta Zuiderzee’ functions as a blueprint of what Marvash are capable of: a musical range from free improvs to danceable grooves, from heartbreaking santur melodies to furious drum solos.
Marvash is an international world music/jazz fusion group and a musical collaboration of santour player Siavash Kamkar, Tehran, Iran, and drummer Martijn Soeterbroek (aka DrummerMartijn), Utrecht, The Netherlands.
In 2022, Marvash released debut album ‘Dar Amalga’ (free for ‘in fusion’): seven original compositions on a musical intersection of Western jazz fusion and Persian traditional music, enriched with pop, progressive rock and dance influences. The unconventional role of the Persian santur is unique: the instrument, typically used in monophonic traditional Persian music, now has a polyphonic solo role.
In 2025, Marvash will finally tour Europe with a full band and record a new (live) album.
